Workshop Description:
How we react to others can create conflict and escalate challenging behaviors -- or create understanding and encourage cooperation. We will teach participants a more effective way to respond to judgement, criticism and control -- as well as to understand the reactions their own behavior invites!
This workshop uses Positive Discipline principles to focus on building respectful relationships, understanding others, and responding in a way that builds safety and promotes peace.
Facilitator Background:
Laurie Prusso is a Professor of Child Development at Modesto Junior College in California. Focusing on emotional and social development in young children and all human beings, she provides consulting services to Head Start, State funded programs, Local Planning Councils, Resource and Referral Agencies, Local First 5 CARES projects, and School-Age programs and others around the state and has been a popular presenter at CAEYC, NAEYC and at other conferences and retreats.
Laurie earned her BA in Human Development and a Masters Degree in Education with an emphasis in Early Childhood from California State University. She has worked with children, adult learners, and parents. In addition, Laurie has been a family childcare provider, and a preschool teacher and director. She is a Certified Positive Discipline Trainer and presents workshops and trainings related to discipline with emotional health and social development in mind. In addition, she consults with programs to improve their adult relationships and to help them support parents and families. As a consultant with West Ed, Laurie is currently a trainer with the CSEFEL project. Laurie’s work has been published in professional journals including the winter 2010 issue of CAEYC Connections.
Laurie's first and favorite role is mother. With 6 grown children, all sons, and 15+ grandchildren, Laurie has over two hundred years of experience parenting and teaching. In her spare time, she writes, plays the guitar and sings when no one is around to hear her.
