    Workshop Description:
Do you want to scream and tear your hair out by the end of the day?  Do you wonder how YOUR child could make you crazy?

Young children are amazing, curious, excited, and have very few skills for dealing with the world around them.  Our job as parents and teachers is to teach them the skills they need to be successful and happy.

Development plays the biggest role in early childhood behavior.  Recognizing the influence of development and the vital importance of some of the very behaviors that drive us nuts can help us relax and work with instead of against our children.  Using effective Positive Discipline Tools in the early childhood years can make all the difference in the world for you and for your child.

The focus of this workshop will be on the interrelatedness of development and behavior, and how to use respectful guidance and discipline to support young children in learning positive behavior and skills that will be beneficial for them as they grow and help you feel confident and secure in your own behavior.

    Facilitator Background:
Laurie Prusso is a Professor of Child Development at Modesto Junior College in California.  Focusing on emotional and social development in young children and all human beings, she provides consulting services to Head Start, State funded programs, Local Planning Councils, Resource and Referral Agencies, Local First 5 CARES projects, and School-Age programs and others around the state and has been a popular presenter at CAEYC, NAEYC and at other conferences and retreats.

Laurie earned her BA in Human Development and a Masters Degree in Education with an emphasis in Early Childhood from California State University.  She has worked with children, adult learners, and parents.  In addition, Laurie has been a family childcare provider, and a preschool teacher and director.  She is a Certified Positive Discipline Trainer and presents workshops and trainings related to discipline with emotional health and social development in mind.  In addition, she consults with programs to improve their adult relationships and to help them support parents and families.  As a consultant with West Ed, Laurie is currently a trainer with the CSEFEL project.  Laurie’s work has been published in professional journals including the winter 2010 issue of CAEYC Connections.

Laurie's first and favorite role is mother. With 6 grown children, all sons, and 15+ grandchildren, Laurie has over two hundred years of experience parenting and teaching.  In her spare time, she writes, plays the guitar and sings when no one is around to hear her.

    Workshop Description:
There are many ways to explain human behavior. Some methods study the chemicals that make up the brain. Others look for genetic explanations or physiological causes. And there are a multitude of theories about how one is parented, to magically explain why one person is different from another. These all fall into the nature versus nurture schools of thought.

We use a different model to explain behavior. We will show you how the decisions you made as a child (which are revealed in your memories) formed your core beliefs that explain why you think, feel, and do what you do. Then we’ll show you how to work with your memories to change the core beliefs that get in your way so you can live a happier, healthier, more stress free life.

    Facilitator Background:
Lynn and Jane are both parent educators and California licensed marriage and family therapists who have worked with clients doing early memory work for over 30 years. Both are Diplomates of Adlerian Psychology. They have developed several training manuals, including Teaching Parenting the Positive Discipline Way and Positive Discipline in the Classroom used by certified trainers and facilitators all over the world.

    Workshop Description:
University professors are noticing a big shift in students and are complaining, "Freshmen of today are like teacups; they are very fragile and used to being served."
How do we raise kids who have the strength and skills to make it successfully on their own? Sometimes we do so much for them in the name of love, that we undermine the development of their ability to be flexible, competent, capable people. Let’s look at how we can consciously parent to help our kids to become resilient and ready to stand on their own. This parenting begins in preschool!
In the hour we will cover:
    • Empowering our kids versus enabling our kids
    • How to help children to move from “Plan A” to “Plan B”
    • What is the root of self confidence and how does it develop?
    • Chores, allowance, homework, helping the family…what roles do these play?
    • Why are firmness and kindness equally important and how do we use them both at the same time to help children develop resilience?

    Facilitator Background:
Glenda is a former elementary school teacher and is the mother of two teenagers. She has been leading Positive Discipline parenting classes since 1999 and has been a CPDT since 2008. She offers 7 week classes, talks, workshops and one on one parent coaching.

    Workshop Description:
To be human is to have dignity and worth. Alfred Adler recognized this 100 years ago when he stated, “The ironclad logic of social living is equality,” meaning equality of dignity and worth. When we feel respected, connected, and encouraged, personal and social harmony results (Doing the right thing); when we don’t, our striving is against social living (Defiance) through personal goals of attention/service, power, revenge, safety or giving up. Workshop Description:
One of the biggest complaints parents have today is that when they set a limit, their children are not happy about it. There is a groundswell of worry and concern based in the mistaken idea that our children should be happy with whatever we want them to do, or we need to back down, negotiate with them, convince them or become angry. It is OK for children to be unhappy when they don't get what they want!

This teleconference will give you the courage to be Kind and Firm, to ask and follow through, and to feel confident in your decisions to help your children develop emotional strength. In addition, it will provide understanding of the process, the triggers, and the solutions to support your effective parenting.

Real life scenarios will allow you to explore your own style and discover fun and effective ways to grow with your child and learn about yourself as you love and respect your child.

In this teleconference we'll look at mistakes; how we can shift our influence regarding them; how we can use them to teach the skills and values we want our kids to learn; and how to recover from them. Please join Sahara for a fun filled hour.

This teleconference will look briefly at the infant/caregiver attachment cycle, the basics of brain development, and how these are specifically impacted by trauma (abuse and/or neglect). Current research regarding some of the most prevalent, and misunderstood ‘mis’behaviors that occur with this population of children (lying, stealing, hoarding of food, etc) will be explored. The teleconference will finish with a discussion of Positive Discipline ‘relationship-based’ theory and several specific PD tools that can be powerful healers for these children.

She retired from full time employment as the Director of Foster and Kinship Care Education at a southern California community college in June 2011, but has continued her work privately, as a trainer and consultant for many agencies and schools. Deepening Your Understanding
Session 2:  A focus on early recollections, life style and birth order

    With
     Deborah Owen-Sohocki, LPC, CPDLT

    Workshop Description:

Deepen your understanding of Adlerian principles by exploring the significance of early recollections in developing a person's life (live style), and how placement in the family system (birth order) impacts perceptions of belonging and significance.

As parent classroom clessroom teachers, parents, step-parents, grandparents, and community members, this session will help you understand your clients, students, family members and  yourself, by understanding the powerful influence of early recollections.

Deborah will share several of her own early recollections from her Lifestyle Assessment to facilitate understanding of the influence of our early recollections on the decisions we make of how to live our life in relationship to others.  We will also explore a few actual cases from Adler and Dreikurs to illustrate the powerful influence of early recollections.  Live participants are invited to bring their own early recollections to be explored if they wish.
