    Workshop Description:

This two-day interactive workshop is designed for early childhood educators, teachers and caregivers who work with children from birth to six years of age. (Parents will also find this workshop helpful, however, the focus is on early childhood education).  Participants will learn to apply principles and tools of Positive Discipline, an Adlerian research-based philosophy, to working wit groups of young children.  They will also gain a deeper understanding of how young children learn, the importance of belonging and social and emotional learning, and how best to teach those skills in a classroom or care setting.  Participants will earn recognitions as Certified Positive Discipline Early Childhood Educators and will learn to:

    1. Create a classroom or care setting where children can develop a sense of belonging and significance based on the importance of contribution and mutual respect.
    2. Understand how young children learn and how to adapt teaching to the needs of this age group.
    3. Foster essential social and emotional skills to support development and school readiness and to understand behavior and how to guide it in groups of young children.
    4. Teach the essential skills for developmentally appropriate participation in class meetings.
    5. Learn Positive Discipline and Adlerian concepts for use in the classroom, preschool community, and with parents.

    Additional Information:
"Parents need support now more than ever - and
research tells us that children are 'hardwired' from
birth to connect with others, and that children who feel
a sense of connection to their community, family, and
school are less likely to misbehave. To be successful,
contributing members of their community, children
must learn necessary social and life skills."

    Facilitator Information:

As a mom to a teenage son and a tween daughter, I have found parenting to be both the most rewarding and the most challenging part of my life journey. I love my kids with every part of my being, and yet sometimes I can't wait to get away from them for a quiet moment to myself (or a week -long vacation if I'm lucky). If you are a parent reading this, I understand this polarity you experience and I have been there many times! We need the support of other parents to truly feel that we aren't alone.

I found my way to Positive Discipline first as a Licensed Professional Counselor working with teens and their parents back in 2008. I love using the tools and concepts of PD to help families grow closer through encouragement, contribution, and mutual respect. I find that helping parents focus on the long term goals they have for their children (that they are kind, generous, thoughtful, resilient, balanced, and so on) allow parents to relax and breathe into the process of nurturing their relationship with their child. And most importantly, they are able to slowly let go of controlling their child's behavior and refocusing on controlling their own behavior so they can be a powerful influence.
I use PD in both a private counseling setting in my work at Austin Family Counseling, and through workshops with parents and caregivers in the community. I have done PD workshops in preschools, elementary schools, churches, non-profit agencies, and correctional institutes. I love sharing PD with parents and caregivers, educators, business leaders, direct care workers, and anyone who wants to be better at relationships. Please contact me if you want to learn more about bringing Positive Discipline to your group or family!
