Workshop Description:
“How can we help children if we don’t understand them?” Rudolf Dreikurs.  Based on the essential principles of Alfred Alder and Rudolf Dreikurs, Positive Discipline offers the most effective way to not only understand children and youth, but will help you gain a more realistic and pragmatic understanding of yourself and other adults.  How many of us still struggle with interpersonal relationships with elderly parents, adult siblings, extended family, and co-workers?

Positive Discipline workshops are different from other classes in that a non-threatening, non-blaming, and enjoyable environment is created where adults can “learn by doing.” Experiential learning allows participants to integrate new insights which help shift paradigms and change behaviors that are more difficult to attain than with other teaching styles.

Positive Discipline is for those who are looking for long-term skills that will encourage children and youth to think independently, become more responsible, and have a greater respect for themselves and others.  Participants will learn:

  • How to better understand people
  • How to let go of control and reduce power struggles while creating an environment of co-operation and mutual respect
  • How to use kindness and firmness together to create discipline that teaches
  • How to understand the motivation behind a child’s misbehavior and to use effective solutions to reduce misconduct
  • How to minimize sibling rivalry by understanding birth order and a child’s private understanding of belonging and feeling valued
  • How to facilitate family meetings

Facilitator Background:
Dori is a dedicated and creative educator with expertise in helping others gain valuable insight by assisting them to embrace change and personal growth. Having over 25 years of experience working with students from K-12 and listening to their stories involving interpersonal relationships with family and teachers, she has come to realize the vast importance of positive role modeling and effective communication.  She has a passionate desire to help strengthen families and support educators, therapists, nurses, and others who work with children and youth through:

  • Perspective taking, being understood, and connecting with others
  • Building trust, positive rapport, and mutual respect
  • Improving effective communication and people skills
  • Moving toward personal balance
  • Taking small steps for big change
  • Ending enabling behaviors
  • Finding the courage to be imperfect

A strong believer in the art of encouragement, Dori helps others to realize that they are not victims of circumstance but are able to determine the outcome of life events by the simple, everyday choices they make.

She has facilitated numerous workshops for community-based organizations, corporations, hospital staff, churches, and within school and university environments.

Dori earned a B.A. in Elementary Education from Cedar Crest College and a M.Ed. from Lehigh University in Elementary School Counseling.  She is employed by KidsPeace as an Outpatient Therapist and Lehigh University as Adjunct Faculty in the Counseling Psychology Program.  Dori has three adult sons and two grandchildren. She resides with her husband in Whitehall, PA.
