    Description:  Join parents just like you for 6 weeks of parenting classes. Learn to discipline with firmness and kindness, have fun as a parent, and set the foundation for important social and life skills. Help your child feel a sense of belonging and significance through mutual respect and encouragement.

    Based on Jane Nelsen's Positive Discipline books, these classes are a fun way to connect with other parents in the community and practice the skills over a few weeks so that you can go more in depth with the material.

    Workshop Description: 
    This interactive training workshop is designed for parents, teachers, parent educators, caregivers, counselors, therapists, nurses and others who want an effective discipline approach that integrates social and emotional learning while reducing challenging behaviors. Upon successful completion of this workshop, participants will be certified as Positive Discipline Parent Educators.

    Positive Discipline focuses on discipline that teaches:

    Children feel a sense of connection, belonging and significance It is kind and firm at the same time and effective long- term It teaches important social and life skills and teaches children to use their power constructively and discover that they are capable.

    Participants in this workshop will:

    -  Learn research based effective tools and techniques for teaching parents how to use discipline that is kind and firm at the same time (non-punitive, non-permissive) Learn how to facilitate a parent class from the position of a non-expert. Gain practice with experiential exercises that help parents go beyond intellectual understanding to be able to respond in empowering ways that teach children.

    -  Learn how to use materials and activities in group settings, parenting classes and individual work with families.

    Facilitators' Information: 

    Jane Nelsen, Ed.D. is the author of the original Positive Discipline book and co-author of many others.  She is the co-creator (with Lynn Lott) of this workshop.  She was an elementary school counselor and a community college instructor in Child Development for 10 years.  Jane is married to Barry Nelsen, and is the mother of seven children, 22 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.  

    Carol Dores is a Certified Positive Discipline Parent and Classroom Educator, and a Positive Discipline Trainer Candidate.  She has worked with hundreds of parents of all aged children (prenatal to adult), as well as educators and staff of preschoolers through high school.  She co-founded Positive Discipline of Western CT, and is on the international Board of Directors of the Positive Discipline Association.  Carol has written over 65 blogs for Positive Discipline of Western CT, and has an article published on Praise versus Encouragement in Compass, a Positive Discipline digital magazine.  She has two adult sons and a husband of over 30 years. Their relationships continue to grow and benefit from Positive Discipline.

    Cost: $375 early registration (received and paid by 9/8/15),  $425 regular registration.  Registration materials.

    CEs:This program is co-sponsored by the North American Society of Adlerian Psychology(NASAP). NASAP is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. In addition, NASAP is a cosponsor of this event. NASAP maintains responsibility for the program. Thirteen Clock hours. There is no additional fee for CE's through NASAP

    This program has been approved for 13 CE's by National Association of Social Workers CT Chapter. Additional fee: $25.

Attendees will earn recognition as a Certified Positive Discipline Classroom Educators and will learn to: 

    • Develop a large teaching toolbox of kind and firm discipline approaches.
      Establish explicit classroom structures and procedures.
      Create an equitable classroom community based on mutual respect.
      Understand the motivation behind students' misbehavior and how to encourage positive change.
      Facilitate effective class meetings teaching social skills and problem-solving.
