Teaching Parenting the Positive Discipline Way (developed by Lynn Lott and Jane Nelsen) is a research-based parent education program that provides a step-by-step approach to starting and leading experientially based parenting groups. This program stands alone or offers significant enhancement to any program. It provides experiential activities that reach the heart to inspire deeper understanding and change.
Participants in this workshop will:
1. Learn research based effective tools and techniques for teaching parents how to use discipline that is kind and firm at the same time (non-punitive, non-permissive).
2. Learn how to facilitate a parent class from the position of a non-expert.
3. Gain practice with experiential exercises that help parents go beyond intellectual understanding to be able to respond in empowering ways that teach children.
4. Learn how to use materials and activities in group settings, parenting classes and individual work with families.
Co-Facilitator: Talin Yesaie is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified Positive Discipline Trainer who has been working in the San Diego area for about 15 years, primarily with children and at risk teenagers. Talin currently works with families in a wraparound program to reduce the risk of out of home placement for children with serious emotional needs. She teaches Positive Discipline parenting classes in the community and also provides individual, couples and family therapy, parent coaching, consultations with schools and daycare centers, and is available for speaking engagements on topics related to parenting and positive discipline. Positive Discipline is not only something she does, but something she lives, and she constantly finds herself utilizing the concepts in her personal relationships. She loves working with people interested in understanding and sharing the PD principles, and as she likes to say, “Positive Discipline is not something you learn and teach, but it’s something you discover in yourself and spark in others.”
Facilitator: Aisha Pope is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Positive Discipline Trainer who has been working in the San Diego area for about 15 years. She currently offers counseling services to children, adults, couples, and families addressing a variety of challenges from parenting and discipline struggles, to emotional, behavioral, and relationship problems. She also uses the Positive Discipline approach as a foundation for 1:1 parent coaching, parenting classes, parenting workshops, and workshops for professionals who work with children. She specializes in the treatment of trauma and has worked extensively with the foster care system. In all of her work, she employs a strengths based, solution focused approach to helping clients identify things they want to change, and figure out how best to do that for themselves. Aisha is also the author of a children's book, My Brother ~ Autism ~ And Me. What keeps her most busy though, is the time she spends mothering her very spirited 9 year old son and two year old daughter!
