    Kristine currently works at the San Mateo Family Health Services Department, as the Training and Development Coordinator. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from San Francisco State University and a Master's degree in Psychology Family Counseling from Golden Gate University. Kristine has been providing trainings and parenting classes with the San Mateo County Family Health Services, since 2001.


    Workshop Information

    Teaching Parenting the Positive Discipline Way (developed by Lynn Lott and Jane Nelsen) is a research-based parent education program that provides a step-by-step approach to starting and leading experientially based parenting groups. This program stands alone or offers significant enhancement to any program. It provides experiential activities that reach the heart to inspire deeper understanding and change.

    Participants in this workshop will:

    1. Learn research based effective tools and techniques for teaching parents how to use discipline that is kind and firm at the same time (non-punitive, non-permissive).
    2. Learn how to facilitate a parent class from the position of a non-expert.
    3. Gain practice with experiential exercises that help parents go beyond intellectual understanding to be able to respond in empowering ways that teach children.
    4. Learn how to use materials and activities in group settings, parenting classes and individual work with families.
    This is a paid training for Family Health Services staff. It is not open for public at this time.

    Becky is a Certified Positive Discipline Trainer, Certified Positive Discipline Classroom Educator, and Certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator. She trains staff at schools in Positive Discipline, delivers Positive Discipline classes and workshops to parents, teaches social emotional learning lessons to students, and applies the Positive Discipline principles at home with her own family.  She believes that a community approach to education benefits everyone and makes it easier to help families, schools, and organizations grow children into responsible, respectful, and happy adults.

    Facilitator Information:
    Cathy is a Certified Positive Discipline Trainer in both parenting and classroom education and has been offering school trainings and facilitating Positive Discipline workshops for over 5 years. She also offers Positive Discipline coaching to families and educators who are striving to incorporate the philosophy into their lives. She is the owner of Middle Ground Parenting based in San Jose, CA and has additional expertise in early childhood education and working with parent participation schools. She is the mother of 2 and her best teachers have been her now 12 and 15 year old daughters.

    Workshop Descriptions:
    This two-day interactive workshop is designed for teachers, counselors, school staff and administrators who want an effective discipline approach that integrates social and emotional learning while reducing challenging student behaviors. Attendees will earn recognition as a Certified Positive Discipline Classroom Educator and will learn to:
    1. Develop a large teaching toolbox of kind and firm discipline approaches.
    2. Establish explicit classroom structures and procedures.
    3. Create an equitable classroom community based on mutual respect.
    4. Understand the motivation behind students' misbehavior and how to encourage positive change.
    5. Facilitate effective class meetings teaching social skills and problem-solving.
    6. Learn Positive Discipline/Adlerian Psychology for use in the classroom and school community.
    7. Gain information on how to address the effects of childhood trauma and insecure attachment.

She is the co-chair of the Positive Discipline Mentor Group of Southern California and spends most of her professional time working with parents, parent educators and teachers in individualized coaching sessions, classes, workshops and teacher in-services.

She has been facilitating parenting workshops for 9 years and has over 20 years of leadership and teaching experience at the early childhood through graduate school levels. Catherine lives in the East Bay with her partner and children ages 11 and 14.

    Mary Nelsen-Tamborski, wife and mother of three young boys, is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Intern at Roots and Wings Counseling and Consulting in San Diego. She is also a Certified Positive Discipline Trainer and Parenting Coach.
    Mary’s formal training is secondary to the life training she received from her mother, Dr. Jane Nelsen, a Marriage and Family Therapist and author of the Positive Discipline books. From the earliest time she can remember her mother and father had her involved in respectful communication, encouragement, and focusing on solutions.
    Mary is co-author of the “Keeping the Joy in Marriage Tool Cards” and eBook of the same title, with her mother, Jane Nelsen. She is a popular keynote speaker and workshop presenter, and offers many Positive Discipline Parenting classes.
