Unity is a public, tuition-free K-8 school founded in Morristown, New Jersey in 1998.  It remains the only charter school in Morris County and has enrollment coming from more than 30 different school districts.  Unity’s charter was written based on Adlerian principles of discipline.  In keeping with this philosophy Positive Discipline was chosen as a core component of our daily curriculum.  It is embedded in all aspects of the community beginning with administration then filtering through to staff, students and families.  Ongoing training and education is provided in an effort to unify our community in understanding and applying the philosophies of Positive Discipline.

The Mission of Unity Charter School is to teach the importance of protecting and improving the environment by educating our students on the principles of sustainability, ecology, and diversity in a way that celebrates and honors this planet and all its’ inhabitants.  We believe that interdisciplinary and experiential learning opportunities allow the students to gain a deeper understanding of the relevance to the topics they are investigating.  By utilizing the New Jersey Core Content Curriculum Standards interwoven with the Principles of Sustainability, we create opportunities for these learning experiences.  It is through this lens, based on our charter, that we try to educate the students and their families about the importance of caring for and sustaining a healthy planet and its inhabitants for generations to come.

Unity Charter School is a unique learning environment.  We strive to address each student as an individual and consider the importance of educating the “whole child”.  We have multi-age classes to best meet the social, emotional, and academic needs of all students.  In addition, multi-age activities are integrated into our weekly schedule to encourage collaboration amongst students of all ages.  Using Positive Discipline daily, in both  school-wide and class meetings, we foster a peaceful culture based on embracing diversity.  We approach all aspects of discipline with a focus on solutions.  We want to empower the students to resolve conflicts through mutual respect, the wheel of choice, and effective communication in seeking a win-win situation for all.  Our Democratic Governance encourages students to have a voice and take on leadership roles.  Our goal is to educate capable, confident, life-long learners and productive citizens of our world.

“Unity did not teach me what to think, it taught me how to think.”
  ~Alumni student~

“Through class meetings and positive interactions with others, I not only learned a lot about my peers but a lot about myself!”
  ~Alumni student~

“As a former teacher and now the Director of Unity Charter School, I firmly believe that Positive Discipline has had a powerful impact on the school community. All stakeholders; students, parents, teachers, community members, and even visitors comment on the peaceful pulse that resonates every day in the respectful culture we have collectively created.”
  ~Carolyn Mungo: Director~

‘’When I first came to Unity Charter School I had no clue what it meant and how it worked. Coming from schools that practiced hardcore discipline I wasn’t sure how it would be effective. Now three years later I can say that positive discipline is in my opinion the best type of discipline. To me following this program has countless benefits. Instead of conflicts being dismissed without being solved, we can get to the root of the problem, things will get solved, and all the parties involved will leave feeling good and have an understanding of each other. This form of discipline is the most effective and beneficial form that I have seen and experienced.’’
  ~Taylor: 8th grade student~

“Positive discipline has enabled me to find my voice, use it, and ensure that others value my voice. Through encouragement from my teachers and peers, I found my voice. Using the effective forums of Student Government and the daily morning meetings, I use it. And through how highly we value mutual respect, others listen.”
  ~Morgan: 8th grade student~

"I've already learned a great deal through my experiences so far with Positive Discipline at Unity Charter School."  The focus on positive communication gives students and teachers opportunities to engage in complimentary interactions and solution-based results."
~Doug Finken: First Year PE teacher~
